Predator Vs Prey
Just like every biome in all parts of the world, there is something that eats another. Survival of the fittest. You have predators that must catch the prey and the Taiga biome in no different. It has animals from the notorious Caribou to the sneaky fox. But what are these animals and what are there predators and prey?
Predators |
At the top of the food chain, mostly, you have predators, natures population control of the prey. Also controlled on how much prey is in the area and not just a limiting factor. The biome has foxes, lynxes, minks, etc.
The Lynx (As shown in the photo) is not very common especially the Canadian Lynx; when they are young they are blind and helpless and grow slowly, because of this they stay with their mothers for a year (though it takes six months to ween). Another predator is the gray wolf , which is an animal best suited for the Taiga environment but is found mostly anywhere with food. Next is the wolverine, a meat eating animal. The wolverine (which survives the harsh coldness in the Taiga by a special techniques to keep warm and dry) eats mostly rodents, fish, birds, and others. and lastly but certainly not least is the intelligent red fox. A natural hunter of rabbits, and other small critters they are being shot (like the Canadian lynx) by farmers for being pests. |
Prey |
Now, what every species and biomes have, prey which is a primary producer to the predators (foxes, bears and lynxes). Now the prey would mostly be fish, rabbits and plants in the area. Birds that reside here are eaten by the wolverine. But mostly the smaller the organism the more of a target it will become.
